The Asperger Adults of Greater Washington is a support, social and advocacy organization serving adults with Asperger's and other forms of autism in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. We also accept adults with Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD/NVLD), Semantic Pragmatic Disorder (SPD), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). A professional diagnosis is not required for membership. Our meetings and e-mail group are limited to adults in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland who have Asperger's and other forms of autism, NLD/NVLD, SPD and PDD-NOS. We have only one exception: new members may bring one or two friends or family members to their first meeting. Those who qualify for membership are encouraged to contact an officer. Most social activities are open to family and friends. We maintain strict confidentiality of member identities and comments. To protect privacy online, many members use only their first names or use pseudonyms. We offer our members mutual encouragement, connect our members with the right services, organize social activities, and advance our policy interests. Our organization works with local parents' support groups, treatment professionals, social services agencies, and others to achieve mutual goals. |
